The Berkeley Springs Indians wrestling team kicked off their 2022-2023 season by traveling to Washington High School in Charles Town, W.Va., on Saturday, December 3, for the tough Elite Opener. The Elite Opener featured 12 teams from Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia and the teams were some of their states best. 
Berkeley Springs had only two wrestlers advance out of their pools to make the championship final three. Senior Isaac Harris (150) won his pool with a 2-0 record by recording a pin and a tech fall win. In the championship round robin Harris lost 5-3 to West Virginia #1 AAA ranked Quentin Velas of Wheeling Park and then dropped a 7-2 decision to Virginia #1 AAA ranked Hunter Salmons of Skyline High School by the score of 9-2 to finish in third place. 
Sophomore Evan Zombro (157) won his pool with a 3-0 record with two pins and a major decision. In the championship round robin Zombro lost 7-2 to Benjamin Smith of Mount St. Joseph (Maryland). Zombro would bound back and record a 14- 8 win over Zachary Burton (Stonebridge, Virginia) to finish in second place.
The Indians would finish in seventh place out of the 12 teams. The Indians will be back on the mat this coming Saturday, December 10 when they travel to Front Royal, Va., to participate in the Appalachian Duals at Skyline High School. The Indians will start their pool with John Handley, Fauquier and River- side at 10 a.m.
