Maryann Arlina Brown Mackey

1944-2022

Maryann Arlina Brown Mackey, 78 of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., departed this earthly life October 3, 2022 after a long illness.

She was born September 4, 1944 to the late Waildia Madge Strader Brown and Edward Brown.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by grandson Matthew Bryan Ridge and sister Yvonne Paulette Brown Lease.

Maryann was a life-long learner and teacher.

After graduating from Burnsville High School, she went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art Education from Glenville State College in 1966.

When she and her family moved to Loudoun County, Virginia, she continued her love of teaching as a Child Care Supervisor for the Loudoun County Parks and Recreation Board in their Early Childhood Development program. She retired after seventeen years of service.

Her love of reading was always evidenced by conversations of the most recent finds in the county library and book store and she was gifted to inspire others to read. She particularly enjoyed history and had a passion for family genealogy. It was not unusual to join her on an excursion to a recently discovered cemetery to look at names and dates on headstones. Always one to keep up with current events in the world, she kept an eagle eye on the political scene.

Left to cherish her memory is her loving husband of 58 years, John Walter Mackey; her son Philip Brian Mackey and wife Beverly Mackey, son Michael Shawn Mackey and wife Debbie Mackey; grandchildren Melissa Shaw and husband Alex Shaw, Robyn Gunton, Kathryn Mackey, Jacob Mackey and wife Reagan Mackey, Jocelyn Mackey, Lillianne Mackey, Lauren Mackey and five great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind brother Jerry Edward Brown and wife Wilma Brown, brother Sidney Lawrence Brown and wife Dianna Brown, sister Lillian Brown and companion Everett Pritt and sister Sonnie Brown James and husband Mark James.

In keeping with her wishes, she was cremated and interment in the K of P cemetery in her home town of Burnsville, West Virginia will be at a later date.

A Celebration of Life to honor Maryann’s memory will be planned in the future. Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., has served the Mackey family at this time of loss.
