Sue Ellen Golden

1951-2021

Sue Ellen Golden, age 69, of Warfordsburg, Pa., wife of Dennis K. Golden for over 51 years, passed away on Saturday, August 28, 2021 at the Meritus Medical Center, in Hagerstown, Md., from complications caused by the Covid virus.

She was born on Friday, September 28, 1951, in the Berkeley Springs, W.Va. War Memorial Hospital. Her parents were the late Raymond Oliver Duvall and Ruth Frances (Barkman) Duvall, formerly of Warfordsburg.

Sue and Denny met at the age of 16, and were married October 4, 1969.

Denny had enlisted in the US Navy, and left for boot camp in November, 1969. Denny’s first assignment sent him to Roosevelt Roads Naval Station in Puerto Rico and Sue was able to soon join him there.

Their daughter Nicole was born there on June 11, 1972.

Sue was a Christian with a deeply devoted faith in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was a member of Cedar Grove Christian Church, where she attended for most of her life, along with her parents, and later with her husband and children.

Her parents had a cottage at Crystal Spring Camp Meeting Grounds where she loved to attend, along with many others of her family. She had many friends and good memories there.

Sue graduated from Southern Fulton High School in 1969. She then attended, and graduated from Award Beauty school, in Hagerstown, Md., and got her Beautician’s license. She worked in that career for a short time, until she felt called to work as a nurse’s aide at the Fulton County Medical Center, in McConnellsburg, Pa. While there she learned so much from that experience. She continued to work and studied nursing, attending and graduating from Hagerstown Jr. College, and becoming an RN. Her career took her to many places of employment, among which were the Maryland Prison System; Dr. Evaristo Lardizabal, in Hagerstown, Md.; City Hospital, in Martinsburg, W.Va.; Washington County Human Development Council; Autumn Acres Care Center; and Valley View Nursing Home, in Berkeley Springs W.Va., where she had the opportunity to have her daughter, Nicole, work alongside her. While working at Valley View, Sue was diagnosed with having MS and had to retire from nursing. Even after being diagnosed with MS, Sue still was devoted to helping her husband, Denny, with his career as a land surveyor in Pa. and Md. She kept the books and helped out however she could. Sue loved people and helping anyone in need if she could. She and daughter Nicole went on a medical missionary trip to the Honduras for two weeks in either 1986 or 1987. They were both very touched by the poverty and needs of the people there.

Besides her husband, Denny, Sue is survived by her grandchildren, Sydney R. Yonker and Logan A. Yonker; son-in-law, Richard A. Yonker, of Clear Spring, Md.; two sisters, Beverly Bard and Saundra Young, both of Warfordsburg, and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her parents, Sue was preceded in death by her infant son, Aaron Michale Golden, in 1974; her daughter, Nicole Renee’ Yonker, in 2021; and brother, Keith A. Duvall, in 2020.

A Celebration of Sue’s life will be held on Saturday, September 11, 2021, at noon, in the Cedar Grove Christian Church, in Warfordsburg, Pa., with Rev. Timothy Close officiating. Burial will follow in the Church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Church for two hours prior to the services.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the National MS Society, P.O. Box 91891, Washington, DC 20090-1891, or call 855-372-1331.

Arrangements were entrusted to the Grove Funeral Home in Hancock, Md.
