The Berkeley Springs Sheetz store was evacuated and temporarily closed mid-day Tuesday while police investigated a closed metal container discovered by store employees in a store dumpster on Tuesday morning.
Morgan County Sheriff K.C. Bohrer reported that he responded to the store after receiving a 911 dispatch for a “suspicious package.”
Bohrer and store staff reviewed store security video and were “unable to determine the origin of the container”. Sheriff Bohrer contacted West Virginia State Police Bomb Technician Sgt. Faircloth, and sent the trooper a photo of the container. According to Bohrer, Sgt. Faircloth advised the item should be x-rayed. Deputies and Reserve Deputies secured the area around the dumpster, and Sheetz staff evacuated and closed the store until the item was determined to be safe.
Sheriff Bohrer described the item as a locked box with a digital electronic combination device that was roughly the size of a suitcase.
Police said the item was discarded in the trash by an unknown person.
