Registration still open for MC After 3 Summer Camp at Cacapon State Park

by Kate Evans

The eighth annual MC After 3 Summer Camp is set for July 25-August 5 at Cacapon State Park Morgan County students entering sixth through twelfth grade are eligible to attend the free summer camp, which runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.  Registration is still open for the free camp.

Activities will include horseback riding, boating, daily swimming, fishing, outdoor games, hiking and team-building competitions, said MC After 3 Program Coordinator Summer Goller. Breakfast, lunch and a snack are provided as is limited bus transportation.

The very first team-building contest is “Anything That Floats” at the lake, Goller said.  Another activity is “Color Wars”, where the kids all wear white shirts and everyone throws color bombs.

They plan to offer the Starting Points Empower U initiative again to introduce the girls to a positive self-image, she said. Last year they had a female car mechanic visit that talked to the girls and taught them how to change a tire.  The girls also built a birdhouse. Comparable empowerment activities will be organized for the boys at camp.

The MC After 3 Summer Camp registration is online.  Application forms can be found on the Morgan County Schools website at morganschools.net.  Students can attend either week (July 25-29) or (August 1-5) or both weeks. The choice of what weeks teens want to attend should be indicated on the registration form. The deadline for registration is July 17.

Space for the summer camp is limited and registration is on a first come, first served basis.  The camp can accept up to 60 teens.

Goller said that the is a really great opportunity especially for kids transitioning to a new school.  They get a chance to meet their peers and interact with kids that they may not usually get to meet.

The summer camp is also very healing and gives kids a chance to unplug from their cell phones and “go be kids,” Goller said.

“It’s completely fun stuff,” she said.
