The Paw Paw Pirates Track and Field Team took their athleticism to the Class A State Championships in Charleston last weekend May 19 and 20. All three of the Pi- rate athletes were looking to become the first Paw Paw state track and field cham- pion.
On the girl’s side freshman Pricilla Corbin wrapped up her first state track meet with a ninth place finish in the long jump with a jump of 13’10”.
On the boys side another freshman Donovan Tanouye came up short in his bid to earn all-state honors.
In the 1600 meters Tanouye finished in seventh place with a time of 4:51. In the long jump Tanouye fin- ished in ninth place with a jump of 18’11”.
Junior Dalton Kasekamp was knocking on the door of a state title in the shot put. However, when the event ended Kasekamp was a state runner-up with a throw of 46’10”. Kasekamp picked up
his second all-state honors with a fifth place finish in the discus with a throw of 138’ 4”. Kasekamp’ s second place finish in the shot was the highest finish ever by a Paw Paw High School track athlete and the junior will be looking to capture the elusive state gold next season.
The Paw Paw boys’ team achieved their highest finish in the state track and field meet. The Pirates finished in 15th place out of 26 teams with 10 points.
