Man found deceased in state park bathhouse

Police and EMS units were called to the Berkeley Springs State Park Bathhouse shortly after 5 p.m. on Monday, December 13 and blocked off the area in response to a 911 call for a drowning.

Morgan County Sheriff K.C. Bohrer said a 71-year-old male was found unresponsive in the bathhouse by a staff member who noticed the man had gone over his time in the Roman Baths. A preliminary investigation indicated that the man had possibly suffered a medical issue and slipped under the water in one of the baths.

Deputies Hedrick and Diehl from the Morgan County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene. EMS staff tended to the man, who was transported to War Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. Medical examiners will determine the official cause of death.

Police said the man was visiting the area from Virginia, and officers are still working to contact his next of kin.
