Lester Livingstone Engel, Jr.

1937-2021

Lester Livingstone Engel, Jr., age 83, of Little Orleans, Md., passed away on Tuesday, September 28, 2021, at UPMC Western Maryland Hospital, in Cumberland, Md.

Born December 28, 1937, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Lester Livingstone Engel, Sr. and Evelyn Mae (Scott) Engel. He was the widower of Brenda L. (Bovey) Engel, who passed away on April 4, 2019. He married Brenda, the love of his life, on Halloween, during one of his military leaves, and they were married for almost 60 years.

Lester graduated from Bethesda Chevy Chase High School in 1956, as a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon; and promptly joined the U.S. Navy, where he proudly flew as a radar and aviation electronics technician, with missions over Newfoundland. After an honorable discharge for the Navy, Lester worked briefly for Jansky & Bailey of Atlantic Research Corporation, as a radio technician, before joining the Department of Natural Resources Police as a Wildlife Officer in 1969. After retiring with the rank of Corporal, he loved what he did so much that he returned from retirement to go back into uniform as the Reserve Officer Coordinator for Western Maryland from 1996 through 2009.

His family and friends will miss how he could light up a room with a smile while telling his many fascinating stories.

He was a member of the James W. Bowers Masonic Lodge #173, in Hancock, Md.; the Federal Order of Police, Town Hill Lodge #77; and the Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge #1483, in Berkeley Springs, W.Va.

He is survived by his daughter, Rebecca Joyce Duve and her husband, Francis, of Olney, Md.; and a brother, Richard Lee Engel and his wife, Cathy, of Pennsylvania.

Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two sons, Kenneth Livingstone Engel, and Wayne Lester Engel; and two sisters, Betty Lou Willis, and Shirley Jane Rivers.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 29, 2021, at 12 noon, at the Grove Funeral Home, 141 West Main Street, Hancock, Md. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the services. The Masonic Lodge, and the Department of Natural Resources will both conduct a memorial service at the Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Rocky Gap Veterans Cemetery, in Flintstone, Md. Pastor Becki Wessinger will officiate.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations in Lester’s name to the Foundation for Maryland Conservation History (FMCH), c/o Francis O. Zumbrun, Treasurer, 608 North First Street, La Vale, MD 21502-7214.
