Dorothy Jane Brown Kerns

1928-2022

Dorothy “Dot” Jane Brown Kerns, age 93, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., passed away with her family by her side on Thursday, March 24, 2022 at the Stonerise Berkeley Springs Center.

Born July 10, 1928 in Cumberland, Md., she was the daughter of the late Raymond Harry and Lillian Arbutus Miller Brown.

She was a member of the Independent Church of God in Hedgesville, W.Va.

She attended public schools and lived in Cumberland, Md. until she met her husband Albert, whom she married on February 5, 1969, and moved to Hancock, Md.

Dorothy worked for Curtis’s Confectionary, Fairview Orchards, the Washington County Commission on Aging and cleaned houses throughout her lifetime.

When she was in her late 50’s, she went back to school to obtain her CNA and graduated top of her class.

She loved to spend time with her family, enjoyed word searches, jigsaw puzzles and was an avid television viewer of old westerns. She loved “Gunsmoke,” “Wagon Train” and “The Waltons.”

Dorothy is survived by her children, Mary Louise West and her husband Floyd of Gloucester Point, Va., Curtis Thomas Melton and his wife Judy of Warfordsburg, Pa., Ellen Sue Fox and her husband Keith of Berkeley Springs and Alberta Lillian Diehl and her husband Grant II of Warfordsburg, Pa., her daughter-in-law, Patty Anderson of Ridgeley, W.Va., two sisters, Janice McBride and Naomi Lynch, both of Cumberland, one brother, Arthur Brown of Cumberland, 13 grandchildren, Leah West of Wicomico, Va., Jerry West of Saluda, Va., Renee Melton, Lori Allen and Grant Diehl III, all of Hancock, Curtis Melton, Jr., Jeremy Anderson and Tiffany Diehl, all of Warfordsburg, Destinee Watson of Needmore, Pa., Michael Melton of Great Cacapon, W.Va., John Melton of Cumberland, James Melton of Ridgeley and Ashley Diehl of Mercersburg, Pa., 29 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Wilbur “Eb” Kerns on September 27, 2003, one son, John Harry Melton, three sisters, Catherine Wandless, Sharon Cowgill and Ruth Porter and two brothers, James Brown and Harley Brown.

The family received friends from 2-3 p.m. on Monday, March 28 at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 95 Union Street, Berkeley Springs, W.Va. where funeral services were conducted at 3 p.m. Pastor Kirk Powers officiated. Interment was in Greenway Cemetery.
