BSHS Athletic Hall of Fame continues search

The Berkeley Springs Athletic Hall of Fame is continuing to search for viable candidates to be considered for consideration. The process opened in early May and will continue to look for deserving potential inductees until the August 1 deadline. Applications received after the deadline will be held for consideration into the 2023 class.

The Hall is open to athletes, teams, coaches, administrators and friends, who have demonstrated performances in competition, service, support, or leadership in advancing Berkeley Springs athletics during their high school years. The athlete must have ended his career in good standing and must have demonstrated good sportsmanship, citizenship and moral character. Additional consideration may be given for achievements in college and adult competitive careers.

All athletic candidates must have at least five years between the end of their scholastic career and application to the Hall of Fame.

To be considered, the candidate must be nominated, and an application can be completed by anyone. Each year, an individual can nominate one person or team. The application provides essential information on the achievements of the candidate for consideration by the selection committee.

Some committee members are occasionally asked why certain individuals or teams have not entered the Hall of Fame. Usually, this has not occurred because there has never been a nomination with a completed application. On occasion, a candidate may have been voted on three times and failed to receive the necessary support to be inducted. Out of respect for privacy, these nominees are generally not announced to the public.

Nominees are chosen by selection committee members compromised of a combination of athletes, coaches, administrators and friends. Each nomination will be reviewed and discussed at length. Eventually, the selection committee will select an induction class. Nominees, not chosen, will remain on the ballot for a total of three years. After that, the candidate is eligible to be renominated and placed on the ballot provided a new application is completed.

Starting with the class of 2022, we will add a Veterans category to the Hall of Fame. Candidates from 1965 and earlier will be part of this category. It will be the goal of the committee to select at least two inductees or more from these qualified candidates. This category will be voted on separately.

Anyone considered from 1966, or later, will be included in the Modern category. This category will also be voted on separately from the other categories. When applicable, one outstanding team will also be chosen from the combined school history. Ideally, there will be inductees from each of the three categories for each induction class. It will always be our goal to induct every worthy candidate, but to accomplish this, we need your help.
