Betty Lu Washburn, age 86, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died on Saturday, December 4, 2021 at her home.

Born November 12, 1935 in Orange, Va., she was the daughter of the late Tyler Patrick and Mildred Thompson Estes.

She was a high school graduate and also earned a bachelor’s degree.

Betty retired as a political analyst with the U.S. Department of State.

She had been co-owner of the Heritage Trails Antique Mall in Berkeley Springs.

Betty enjoyed playing bridge and had been a homemaker in recent years.

She is survived by her son, Charles Carroll Washburn II of Wallingford, Pa. and two granddaughters, Emma Elizabeth Washburn of Spain and Zoe Isabel Washburn of the United Kingdom.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Carroll Washburn on February 9, 2006 and her daughter, Tracey Danielle Harden on October 23, 2016.

Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday, December 9, 2021 at the Graham Cemetery, 14191 Constitution Highway, Orange, Va. The family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m. on Wednesday at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 95 Union Street, Berkeley Springs, W.Va.
