The Berkeley Springs High School Lady Indians Basketball Team opened their 2021 season on the road at Keyser last Friday, March 5. The Lady Indians were hoping that the delayed start of the winter sports season would help give them time to develop their young talent.
The first quarter gave a glimpse of some positive things to come this season as Berkeley Springs jumped out to a 12-10 first quarter lead. However, that bit of shock woke up the Golden Tornado as they held the Tribe scoreless in the second quarter on their way to a 32-12 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, Keyser kept the pressure on the youthful Lady Indians and held a commanding 49-18 lead. The Lady Indians would not quit as they fought in the fourth quarter, but still could not overcome the final score of 71-30.
The Lady Indians were led by senior Caybrie Clatterbuck (11 points), freshman Emma Widmyer (10 points), senior Tyaira Mifflin (six points) and junior Harly Didawick (three points). Senior Karalyne Banks pulled down five rebounds.
“We had a good first quarter against Keyser. First time we competed with a sectional opponent in a good while. Turnovers plagued us throughout the game especially against the pressure. We have a pretty young team with five freshmen and a sophomore learning the system and getting an opportunity to play against varsity competition. We will be undersized against most of our competition. We really need to focus on the small details of defense especially boxing out and communication. There is certainly some potential with this group,” stated Berkeley Springs head coach Dale McCumbee.
The Lady Indians hosted the Hampshire Trojans on Saturday, March 6 at the Berkeley Springs High School gym. In the first quarter, Hampshire jumped out to a 19-9 lead. By the end of the second quarter, the visiting Trojans held a 31-14 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, Hampshire outscored Berkeley Springs 15-7 to increase their lead to 46-21. By the final horn in the fourth quarter Hampshire took home the 59-30 win.
Berkeley Springs was led by Didawick (eight points), Mifflin (eight points), Banks (six points), Clatterbuck (seven points) and Jazmine Briscoe (one point).
Berkeley Springs was scheduled to have a home contest on Tuesday, March 9 with Moorefield. Then on Thursday, March 11 the Lady Indians will travel to Hedgesville for a 6 p.m. contest. On Saturday, March 13 the Lady Indians will host Union at 5:30 p.m.
