Vietnam monument effort tops $200K mark

Dr. Matt Hahn holds the $200,000 sticker as he readies to put it on the Morgan County Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial Fund “thermometer” in downtown Berkeley Springs on October 3.

A vision for creating a public recognition for veterans of the Vietnam War started 10 years ago with $1. Last Thursday, organizers of the Morgan County Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial Fund and many supporting veterans marked another milestone in the effort. More than $200,000 has now been raised to build a permanent memorial structure on the Fairfax Green in downtown Berkeley Springs. Money has been raised through private donations, dozens of fundraisers and small grants. The group said they need $225,000 to build the memorial.

Dr. Matt Hahn applied the $200,000 red sticker to a fundraising “thermometer” on the site of the future memorial. Dr. and Bibi Hahn made the largest donation to the fund since the last milestone sticker was installed, said Chuck Hampe, fund founder.

Those who served during the Vietnam War and lived in Morgan County can be included on the monument. The deadline to be added to those being listed on the monument is December 31. For more information and to find out how to be included, contact the organization by calling 304-258-1722 or email contact@mcvvmf.org, visit the group’s website or social media or attend any upcoming event.

There will be a benefit dinner at Hillbilly Heaven on November 10 and a Holiday Sock Hop at the Moose in Berkeley Springs on December 14.
