Payton Thompson rushes for 208 Yards

The Berkeley Springs High School Indians Football Team took their 0-7 record to Hampshire County this past Friday, October 12 for a showdown with the Class AAA and 0-6 Hampshire Trojans.
With both teams winless it was a guarantee that one of the teams was walking out of the Trojans football stadium with their first win. Unfortunately for the Tribe it was the home standing Hampshire Trojans who rolled to the 52-18 win.
Hampshire jumped out to a 26-0 lead at the end of the first quarter as the Tribe offense struggled to put together any significant drives. The Trojans increased the lead to 32-0 by the end of the second quarter.
Berkeley Springs bounced back after the Trojans scored to cut their lead to 32-6. Freshman quarterback Gavin Barkley found senior receiver Larry Miller for a five yard touchdown pass. The score was set up by sophomore Payton Thompson’s 79 yard run.
Hampshire moved down the field and scored again to increase their lead to 38-6.
Berkeley Springs scored once again this time when Barkley found senior tight end Trentin Ratcliff for a 20 yard touchdown pass to cut the score to 38-12.
Hampshire scored two more times in the fourth quarter to push their lead to 52-12.
Berkeley Springs once again found the end zone before the end of the game as Thompson scored from three yards out. Thompson set up his score with a 12 yard run.
Offensively Berkeley Springs was led by Thompson. The sophomore running back had a breakout game with 20 carries for 208 yards (10.4 yards per carry) and a touchdown. Freshman quarterback Barkley finished the game 14/27 for 133 yards passing and two touchdown passes. Seniors Larry Miller and Ratcliff led the Tribe in receiving with two touchdown receptions.
Defensively the Indians were led by Davey Hess (12 tackles), Luke Spielman (10 tackles), Thompson (nine tackles), Spencer Bluebaugh (six tackles), Miller (five tackles), Ty’Jae Armstrong (four tackles), Ratcliff (four tackles) and Michael Hinkle (three tackles).
Next up for the Indians is another road trip this Friday, October 19 to Baltimore, Md. for a game with Green Street Academy.
