Tribe earns wins over Paw Paw, Faith Christian & Philip Barbour

The Berkeley Springs High School Indians Varsity Boys’ Basketball Team got back to its winning ways this past week with three wins. Two of the three wins came at home while the final win came in a heavily back and forth game at Philip Barbour.

The Indians hosted Morgan County neighbor the Paw Paw Pirates on Wednesday, February 13.

Berkeley Springs jumped out to a fast 27-9 first quarter lead behind senior EJ Barkley’s 10 points. Seniors Nate Bland (six points) and Ty’Jae Armstrong (three points) along with freshman Gavin Barkley (four points) led the charge.

Paw Paw was led by Nick Hiett (seven points) and Coby Ridgeway (two points) in the first quarter.

In the second quarter the Tribe went on a 19-15 run to take a 46-24 halftime lead. The Indians got scoring from G. Barkley (four points), E. Barkley (four points), Bland (three points), Armstrong (two points), Payton Mann (two points), Trent Kyne (two points) and Larry Miller (three points).

The Pirates got second quarter points from Hiett (six points), Ridgeway (four points), Dylan Moreland (two points) and Dominic Tanouye (three points).

In the third quarter Berkeley Springs came out red hot outscoring Paw Paw 31-2 to build their lead to a 77-26 advantage. Mann (seven points), G. Barkley (seven points), Kyne (six points), E. Barkley (four points), Armstrong (two points), Miller (two points), Cameron King (two points) and Carson Stotler (two points) were all in the zone. Paw Paw’s lone scorer came on a pair of Ridgeway free throws.

In the fourth quarter Paw Paw outscored the Indians 8-6, but the game was already decided as the Indians took the 83-34 win.

Berkeley Springs placed four players in double digits led by E. Barkley (18 points), G. Barkley (15 points), Mann (12 points) and Kyne (11 points), Bland (nine points), Armstrong (seven points), Miller (five points), King (four points) and Stotler (two points) all contributed.

Paw Paw was led by Hiett who scored 15 points all off of three point shots. Ridgeway added eight points, while Tanouye (six points), Moreland (three points) and Gavin Gunther (two points) rounded out the scoring for the Pirates.

Berkeley Springs hosted the Faith Christian Academy Falcons in the nightcap of a triple header on Thursday, February 14.

Berkeley Springs started the first quarter with a 17-9 run.

In the second quarter the Tribe outscored the Falcons 22-8 to take a 33-17 halftime lead. I

n the third quarter Berkeley Springs continued its fast pace with a 14-8 run to maintain a 47-25 lead.

In the final quarter the Tribe saw the Falcons outscore them 14-13, but once again a big first half made the biggest difference in the Indians 60-39 win. Berkeley Springs was led by E. Barkley (15 points), G. Barkley (10 points), Bland (eight points), Armstrong (six points), Mann (six points), Kyne (six points), Dominic Rider (five points) and King (four points).

On Saturday, February 16 the Indians left Berkeley Springs early that morning for a road trip to go play the Philip Barbour Colts in a sectional contest.

The first quarter saw the Tribe and Colts burn up the nets as Berkeley Springs took a 19-16 first quarter lead.

In the second quarter Philip Barbour outscored the Indians 15-14.

However, the Indians went into the locker room at the half with a 33-31 lead. In the third quarter Berkeley Springs fell behind as Philip Barbour went on a 19-13 run to take a 50-46 lead after three.

The fourth quarter saw the Indians rally back with a 20-15 run and watched a potential game winning basket bounce off the win to hang on for the 66-65 win.

Berkeley Springs (12-8) was led by E. Barkley (22 points), Bland (15 points), and G. Barkley (11 points).

The Tribe also got scoring from Mann (nine points), Armstrong (six points), Miller (two points) and Stotler (one point).

Berkeley Springs had a home contest with East Hardy on Tuesday, February 19 for Senior Night.

On Thursday, February 21 the Tribe will wrap up their regular season with an away contest at Moorefield. Junior varsity will tip-off at 6 p.m. and followed by the varsity game at 7:30 p.m.
