Town approves annexation of three properties on East Main Street

by Geoff Fox

Hancock town officials unanimously approved the annexation of three properties with four addresses along East Main Street to be incorporated in to the town limits.

The addresses coming in within the town limits are 305, 307, 317, and 319 East Main Street.

Property parcels at 305, 307, 317, and 319 East Main Street were unanimously approved for annexation during last Wednesday’s town meeting.

These addresses include the car wash across from AC&T, the former Hancock Public Works building, and current Hancock Public Works buildings.

The town-owned property for the Public Works building sits just outside the town limits.

Town Manager Joe Gilbert said a second public forum about the annexation move would take place at the August town meeting.

Copies of the proposed annexation resolution were sent to Maryland Department of Planning, Maryland Department of Legislative Services, Washington County Commissioners and Washington County Department of Planning.

Following the resolution vote, there is a 45-day window where those agencies can comment or object to the move.

“Unless there is a serious objection to the annexation, then in 45 days from tonight, it will take effect,” Gilbert said.

There is an amendment Gilbert said he’d have to file with the state and county, which would change the post-annexation zoning from Town Center to General Commercial.

He said the change would make regulations on those properties “looser” than Town Center.

The property owner wanted to make sure there were no restrictions or need any special exceptions for a proposed carwash.
