School board takes up gym naming proposal this week

by Geoff Fox

The Washington County Public Schools Board of Education was to take into consideration this week the request to name the gym at Hancock Middle-High School after former Panthers coach Jeff Spielman. An agenda for the Tuesday school board meeting included the discussion item. Chief Operating Officer Jeffrey Prouix will be making the presentation.

Spielman, who was a longtime basketball coach at Hancock High School, passed away on June 22 after a short battle with Lymphoma.

In July, a petition began circulating online and around town to have the gym at Hancock Middle-Senior High School named after Spielman to honor his years of contributions to local athletics.
