Randolph Ernst “Max” Schmeling II
1936-2019
A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies and begins a new journey with each chapter.
Randolph Ernst “Max” Schmeling II began the next chapter with his Lord and Savior at his Berkeley Springs home on Thursday, April 18, 2019.
The first chapter for Max’s book began July 3, 1936 in Freeport, New York as son of the late Randolph Ernst Schmeling I and Anna Schaff Schmeling. Max attended Chaminade High School in Mineola, N.Y., and St. Francis Prep in Spring Grove, Pa. He attended Georgetown University and played as center for the Hoyas in 1956-1957 before beginning his career chapter as factory sales representative for commercial fireproofing and insulation along the East Coast.
In his later years Max enjoyed his time closer to home, going to auctions in search of different antiques, vinyl records and great books to take on his next journey.
Although Max was unable to venture far in his final chapters of life, he enjoyed traveling through his reading and keeping up with the daily world through The Washington Post and national news. He enjoyed watching all sports and was an avid fan of the Washington Redskins. He loved searching for the mystery of Oak Island and following the Alaskan Bush People living off the grid. He enjoyed telling a good story and never at a loss for words.
Although this chapter has ended, Max began his new journey reuniting with his parents, brothers Peter and Norman Schmeling and many other friends and family waiting to greet him.
Those left to celebrate Max’s new journey are his wife of 59 years, Marian Blanche Daley Schmeling; daughter Elizabeth A. “Bette” Cain of Berkeley Springs; son Randolph E. III and his wife Sharon of Berkeley Springs; son Bryan K. and his wife Jackie of Martinsburg; granddaughters Saleen Schmeling and Maddie Dickens and many nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial was offered at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 22, 2019 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, Liberty & S. Washington Streets, Berkeley Springs, W.Va., with the Rev. Fr. Leonard A. Smith as celebrant. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery. The family received friends from 10-11 a.m. on Monday at the church.
