The Berkeley Springs High School Indians hosted the Brunswick Rail Roaders in high school football action Friday night October 11. With the cool temperature and Apple Butter weekend coming up the crowd at Morgan Field was hoping that the home team Tribe could pull off an upset against the visitors from Brunswick, Md.
Brunswick took the opening kick-off and methodically moved the ball down the field while eating up a lot of the first quarter clock. Eventually the Rail Roaders punched the ball in for a touchdown and with the extra point took an early 7-0 lead.
Berkeley Springs bounced back and also used a methodical drive and chewed up the remainder of the first quarter as they marched down the field. The Tribe got inside the Brunswick 15 yard line before a Gavin Barkley pass was picked off in the end zone. The interception was one of three for the talented sophomore quarterback.
From there Brunswick scored 20 straight points to take a 27-0 halftime lead. In the second half the Rail Roaders upped the lead to 42-0.
Late in the game the Tribe’s Peyton Thompson broke loose for a 63 yard touchdown run and with the extra point made the score 42-7.
The Indian offense had some good moments throughout the game. Quarterback Barkley finished the game with eight completions for 72 yards and three interceptions. Thompson led the ground game with 14 carries for 103 yards and a touchdown. Evan Thompson added 45 yards rushing and 33 yards receiving for Berkeley Springs.
The Indians (1-5) will next host the Class AAA Hampshire Trojans (0-7) on Friday, October 18. This will be the 2019 Homecoming game for the Tribe. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
