Police arrest roommate in Hancock homicide

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a man as a result of a homicide investigation in Hancock.

According to Sgt. Ward of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, at 6:15 p.m. March 27, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and Hancock Police Department responded to a residence at 1B Fleming Drive for a check well-being of an individual.

Upon arrival, officers found Eddie Wayne Smith, 53, deceased in the residence.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Unit responded to the scene along with the Hagerstown Regional Criminal Laboratory to conduct an investigation.

Smith’s body was ultimately transported to the Baltimore Maryland Medical Examiner’s Office to await an autopsy.

In the investigation, police learned Smith’s roommate, Everett J. Allen, 56, was present upon arrival of the first responding officers.

Information received allowed police to charge Allen with first degree murder and various other crimes.

According to online court documents, Allen was also charged with second degree murder, second degree assault, first degree assault, manslaughter, and reckless endangerment.

Ward said Allen was transported to the Washington County Detention Center where he remains held without bond.

“At this time, the investigation is on-going,” Ward said in a release.
