1945-2020

Philip Eugene Unger, age 74, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va. died on Wednesday, March 4, 2020 at his home.

Born December 17, 1945 in Berkeley Springs, W.Va. he was the son of the late Raymond H. and Vera L. Young Unger.

Philip graduated from Berkeley Springs High School in 1963. He was a 1967 graduate of Shepherd College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Secondary Education. While attending Shepherd College, he was an active member of the TKE Fraternity. Philip went on to obtain his Master of Divinity in 1971 from Union Theological Seminary in Virginia. He was ordained as a Presbyterian Minister by the Presbyterian Church of the United States in 1971.

He was an avid golfer and he loved Major League Baseball particularly the Baltimore Orioles and his favorite hobby was photography.

Philip was the pastor at Mt. Olivet Presbyterian Church in Hancock, Md. He has been the pastor at Mt. Olivet since 1999.

Philip was also employed by the Morgan County School system as a teacher and vice principal at Berkeley Springs High School. He started his career with Morgan County Schools in 1988 as a teacher and retired in 2011 as the vice principal for Berkeley Springs High School. Philip was the Berkeley Springs High School Teacher of the Year and Morgan County Teacher of the Year in 2004. He was also Student Council Advisor for Berkeley Springs High School for the last 20+ years. Philip recently received the “Making a Difference” award from Berkeley Springs High School for the second term of the 2019-2020 school year.

He is survived by his beloved Mustache Parrot, Mickey; his daughter, Jennifer H. Michael and husband Dave Michael of Berkeley Springs; two grandchildren, Tailyn and Kaleb Michael and one granddog, Chloe Michael; one uncle, Carroll Young of Berkeley Springs.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Linda H. Unger. Also his Maternal grandparents George and Maude Young and Hillary and Carrie Michael Unger.

Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 7, 2020 at Mt. Olivet Presbyterian Church, 14253 Exline Road, Hancock, Md., where the family received friends from 10-11 a.m. at the church, with the Rev. Dr. Robert S. Osborne officiating. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.

Family received friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Friday at Hunter Anderson Funeral Home, 36 S. Green Street, Berkeley Springs. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Mt. Olivet Presbyterian Church Education Fund, 14253 Exline Road, Hancock, MD 21750.
