Pastor Shirley A. Hiles
1938-2020
Pastor Shirley Ann Hiles, age 81, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died on Sunday, August 23, 2020 at her home while surrounded by her loving family and while under the care of Hospice of the Panhandle.
Born November 1, 1938 in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Roy Woodrow and Frances Virginia Barker Moss.
She was a retired Pastor of Word of Deliverance Church in Berkeley Springs. Pastor Shirley and her late husband Pastor Jack “Pap” Hiles, co-founded the church and conducted their first service on June 3, 1979. Word of Deliverance Church Youth Camp and God’s Storehouse are both offspring of the original church and continue today as a result of Pastor Shirley’s continued commitment and support.
She and Pastor Jack were instrumental in creating “The Law of Privilege” for clergy in the State of West Virginia.
She was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from Archbishop David Huskins.
Pastor Shirley attended schools in Berkeley Springs.
In her earlier years, she worked at Vanguard Products in Berkeley Springs.
She enjoyed reading, playing games, especially scrabble and canasta, traveling, collecting tea pots and loved spending time with her family.
Pastor Shirley is survived by her children, Pastor Jack William Hiles and his wife Lola, Dr. H. Lynn Hiles and his wife Joyce, Andrew Mark Hiles and wife Tama, Pastor Lisa Kay Unger and her husband Dan, Sherri Jill Murray and her husband Jim, Terri Jean Booher and her husband Monte, Amy Jo Hiles and her companion Harry Asquith all of Berkeley Springs; two sisters, Shelby Jean Dechenes of Hedgesville, W.Va., Genevieve Virginia Funk of Berkeley Springs; four half-sisters, Mary Lee Yost of Sir Johns Run, W.Va., Carol Mitchell and Sandy Flowers both of Hancock, Md., Lenora Montgomery of Hemet, Calif.; 15 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Pastor Jack Winford “Pap” Hiles; one great grandson, Grant William James Moran; one sister, Daisy Mae Somers; one half-sister, Regina Unger; two half-brothers, Eddie Clark and Billy Clark.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday, August 27, 2020 at Word of Deliverance Church, 103 Honeycrest Drive, Berkeley Springs, with Pastor Jack W. Hiles, Lisa Unger and Dr. H. Lynn Hiles officiating.
Private entombment will be in Greenway Cemetery Mausoleum.
The family will receive friends from 2-8 p.m. on Wednesday at the church.
