Paige D. DeLawder
1924-2019
Paige Dixon DeLawder, 95, of Berkeley Springs, died Thursday, December 5, 2019 at his home while under the care of Hospice of the Panhandle.
Born May 8, 1924 in Lost River, he was the son of the late Luther and Mary Catherine Wilmetta Foltz DeLawder.
He was a Christian.
He attended public schools in Mathias and attended Berkeley Springs High School.
He served as Private First Class with the U.S. Army from May 13, 1943 until his honorable discharge on February 14, 1946. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the Soldier’s Medal, the American Theater Ribbon, the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and the World War II Victory Ribbon.
He and his late wife owned and operated Parkside Grocery Store in Berkeley Springs from 1949-1954. He retired as a mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service and was a member of the National Rural Letter Carriers Association.
He liked camping, hunting, gardening and was a tinkerer.
Surviving are his children, Karen Henry, Steven DeLawder and Janice Lee and James DeLawder all of Berkeley Springs, John DeLawder, Bruceton Mills; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Lea Culp DeLawder on May 9, 1987; one grandson, Travis Lee; four sisters, Loretta Bott, Mazie Tozler, Edith Lowe and Janet McCoy and two brothers, Clyde DeLawder and Norman DeLawder.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, December 10 at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Center. Pastor Michael Leedom officiated.
Interment with military honors provided by the Tri-State Honor Guard were in Union Chapel Cemetery.
