1962-2021

Michael David Burkey, age 58, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died on Friday, January 8, 2021 at Winchester Medical Center.

Born July 16, 1962 in Cumberland, Md., he was the son of the late Joseph Jerome and Rosemary Leonard Burkey.

He was a Catholic.

Michael was a graduate of Bishop Walsh High School in Cumberland and earned a master’s degree in healthcare administration from the University of Maryland.

He had worked with the Braddock Medical Group in Cumberland, Md.

Michael served with the U.S. Navy as an Aerospace Medical Technician the rank of E6 until his honorable discharge.

He was awarded four Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, two Navy Unit Commendations, the Meritorious Unit Commendation, the Navy “E” Ribbon, four Good Conduct Medals, the Navy Expeditionary Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, the Navy and Marine Corps Overseas Service Ribbon, the NATO Medal, the Southwest Asia Service Medal with Bronze Star, and the Navy Commendation Medal.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was highly active with the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

He was a member of Alderton-Dawson American Legion Post #60 and Risinger-Stotler V.F.W. Post #4019, both in Berkeley Springs.

He loved to travel, was an avid reader and a wine enthusiast.

Surviving are his wife, Doris Faye Perry Burkey, at home, his children, Gerald Lee “JR” Perry, Jr. and his partner Amy Stull, Jessica Amanda Perry and her partner Robert Fletcher and Ashley Renee Morris and her husband Steven, all of Berkeley Springs, Elissa Marie Foley of Green Spring, W.Va., Joseph Michael Burkey and his partner Tara Iliff of Cumberland and Cameron Patrick Burkey and his wife Amber of Asheville, N.C., his sister, Rita Marie Bradburn and her husband Isaac of Green Spring, one brother, Philip Burkey and his wife Kitty of Mt. Airy, Md., his sister-in-law, Julie Burkey of Winter Park, Fla., 17 grandchildren, Taylor Stull of Mercersburg, Pa., Quintin Thompson of Morgantown, W.Va., Cameron Stull, Jenna Perry, Cheyenne Hiles, Remington Hiles, Whitney Hiles, Lacie Morris and Steven Morris, all of Berkeley Springs, Kyla Martin, Kaitlynn Foley and Levi Foley, all of Green Spring, Kasadie Burkey and Ben Fravel, both of Cumberland, Baylee Maiers of Marion, S.C., Jerome Burkey and Lucas Burkey, both of Asheville, one great grandson, Bryson Stanley of Mercersburg and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Gary Louis Burkey.

Services and interment with military honors provided by the Tri-State Honor Guard will be in Rocky Gap Veterans Cemetery, Flintstone, Md. and will be private.
