Mae E. Shoemaker
1928-2020
Mae Elizabeth (Myers) Shoemaker, 91, formerly of Hancock, Md., went home to be with her Lord and family on Monday, August 3, 2020.
She was born in Little Cove, Pa. on August 29, 1928 to the late Roy P. and Nelia Catherine (Thomas) Myers. She was the widow of Floyd T. Shoemaker, whom she married on August 23, 1947.
She attended the one room school in Little Cove known as “Cook’s school.” Her memories of attending the school and Mt. Zion Lutheran Church were some of her fondest.
She graduated from 8th grade at Clear Spring School in Clear Spring, Md.
Even though born with a birth defect of her left arm, she accomplished many feats throughout her life.
During World War II, she worked at Hagerstown Hosiery. She later worked in various restaurants as both a prep and grill cook. She was known for her homemade slippery ham potpie at these restaurants.
Later, she worked for Goodwill Industries at the “Interstate 68” visitor center on Sidling Hill Mountain. Her last job was for Pilot on Route 63. She retired at the age of 79.
Mae was a member of the Stone Bridge Church of the Brethren in Hancock, Md. and a member of the DAV & American Legion Auxiliary.
Surviving are three daughters, Mary Darlene Largent of Hagerstown, Md., Pamela Estalee Johnson (Ronnie) of Mercersburg, Pa., and Brenda Charmaine Jones of Black Stone, Va.; a son, John Roy Shoemaker (Shirley) of Three Springs, Pa.; two granddaughters, Bonita Trumpower and Lisa Haulman; three grandsons, Christopher Shoemaker, Michael Kinder and John Jones; one great-granddaugher; three great-grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mae was preceded in death by a step-mother, Mary Viola Myers; two infant daughters; a sister, Alma Ruth Mills; a brother, Thomas Grant “Jim” Myers; and a nephew, William Lee Mills.
Services were held on Friday, August 7, 2020, at 2 p.m. at Donald Edwin Thompson Funeral Home, Inc., 13607 National Pike, Clear Spring, Md. The Rev. Dennis Whitmore officiated. Interment will be held privately at the convenience of the family.
The family received friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Friday from 1 to 2 p.m. Due to current COVID-19 regulations, facial coverings were required.
