Lucy P. McKinley
1923-2021
Lucy Patricia (Pat) McKinley, age 97, of Hagerstown, Md. and formerly of Hancock, Md., passed away on Friday, April 9, 2021 at Ravenwood Nursing Care, in Hagerstown.
Born October 10, 1923, in Akron, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Jay Elmer and Edith May (Baker) Billings; and the foster daughter of her paternal aunt and uncle, the late George Joseph and Ida Mae (Billings) Trexler.
She was the widow of Harry C. “Mac” McKinley, Sr., whom she married on April 10, 1943, and who died August 25, 1995.
She graduated from Thurmont High School in 1940, and then attended the Hagerstown Business College. She was employed by the U. S. Federal Maritime Commission, in Washington, D.C.; and was co-owner of McKinley’s Food Market, in Hancock. After the Market closed in the 1970’s, she became a Direct Care Aide in the Western Maryland Hospital, in Hagerstown, for eleven years.
Pat was a lover of animals and had helped many dogs, cats, and horses.
She was an avid supporter of many charities; and was a member of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants; and the Daughters of the American Revolution.
She is survived by a son, Stephen L. McKinley and his wife, Gloria, of Hagerstown, Md.; a daughter, Patricia J. (Patti) Crouse and her husband, Mike, of Lexington, Va.; a daughter-in-law, Mildred D. (Millie) McKinley, of Hancock; eight grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents; foster parents; and husband; she was preceded in death by a son, Harry C. (Neil) McKinley, Jr.; two brothers, Jay Billings, Frank Billings; and a foster brother, Edwin Trexler.
Services will be held at the convenience of her family at a later date.
Memorial donations in her name may be made to your local SPCA; St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 18313 Lappans Rd., Boonsboro, MD 21713; St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church, 2 East High St., Hancock, MD 21750; or to your local Historical Society.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Grove Funeral Home, in Hancock.
