Lady Indians soccer starts off hot

by Jamie Harris
The 2019 Berkeley Springs High School Lady Indians Varsity Soccer Team got their fall season off to a good start last week.
The Lady Indians hosted Class AAA Spring Mills last Tuesday, August 27 at the friendly confines of Morgan Field and then last Thursday, August 29 the Tribe traveled to Frankfort for a contest.
In Tuesday’s contest with Spring Mills the game was a tight back and forth game until the final busser. Junior Mikaila Ek scored first to put Berkeley Springs on the scoreboard.
In the second half the Lady Cardinals went up 2-1 with constant shots at the Berkeley Springs goal.
In the closing seconds senior Hynnja Dietrich tied the game at 2-2 as she took the ball down the right side of the field for the score. As the horn sounded Berkeley Springs earned a 2-2 tie with Spring Mills.
Senior goal keeper Abbie Stotler recorded 19 saves.
On Thursday the Lady Indians headed to Ridgely for a contest with rival Frankfort. In a key early season Class AA Sectional match-up Berkeley Springs earned a hard fought 5-4 win.
The Lady Indians got scoring from Dietrich (two  goals), Ek, junior Caitlin Childers (off an assist from sophomore Britney Huntley) and Kendal Williams.
Abbie Stotler had 22 saves in goal.
Williams is normally a defensive specialist on the soccer field, but this season Coach Steve Havermale moved the senior over to the offensive side and it is paying off. In the early season scrimmage Williams scored three goals against South Hagerstown from Maryland.
“We are trying new midfield positions to help support both sides of the line as Camdyn Huntley (freshman), Charlotte Williams (freshman), Emily Morris (sophomore) and Kira Havermale (junior) have been playing a major support in these positions,” stated Coach Havermale.
“With sickness going around the team the girls played their hardest and had great teamwork. We have a driven team this season and I am looking forward to seeing their improvement with each game,” stated Havermale.
Berkeley Springs had a home contest on Tuesday, September 3 with Keyser.
Coming up for the Indians  is a game  Thursday, September 5 at Hampshire at 5 p.m. and then on Saturday, September 7 Berkeley Springs will travel to East Fairmont for a noon game.

Senior goal keeper Abbie Stotler recorded 19 saves against Spring Mills and 22 saves against Frankfort.
