Indians Soccer Falls to Frankfort and Bishop Walsh

by Jamie Harris

The Berkeley Springs High School Lady Indians varsity Soccer Team is still searching for their first win of the 2018 season as they lost at home to Frankfort 6-4 last Thursday, August 30 and then dropped a 6-2 decision at Bishop Walsh on Saturday, September 1.

Berkeley Springs started fast against Frankfort jumping out to a quick 1-0 lead after a Mikaila Eck goal in the opening minute of the game. Eck scored again off a Taylor Payne assist to push the lead to 2-0 and it looked like Berkeley Springs was going to snap their losing skid. However, the visitors from Mineral County had other plans and raced back to eventually tie the game at 2-2 right before the break.

In the second half, Frankfort kept scoring and held a 5-2 lead with 30:08 left in the half. Berkeley Springs cut into the lead when freshman Whitney Hiles scored her first career varsity goal with a nice angle kick over the Falcon goalie. Hiles’ goal made the score 5-3 with 24:51 left in the game.

Frankfort came back and scored to push the score to 6-3 with 16:09 left in the game.

With 2:10 left in the game Berkeley Springs scored their final goal of the game when Payne scored off an assist from fellow senior Avery Cook.

On Saturday the Lady Indians hit the road for an 11 a.m. game with Bishop Walsh.

With 8:35 left in the first half Bishop Walsh scored to go up 1-0. The score stayed that way to the half.

In the second half Bishop Walsh scored four straight goals to go up 5-0.

With 6:20 left in the game junior Hynnja Dietrich took the ball down the right side of the field and drove in for a hard shot and scored on the goal to cut the Bishop Walsh lead to 5-1.

With 4:13 left in the game, Dietrich scored again this time off of a beautiful kick and assist from junior Kendal Williams.

Bishop Walsh would score one more time to take the 6-2 win.
