Human remains found at Green Ridge State Forest

Maryland State Police are trying to identify human remains that were discovered Sunday, February 25, in Green Ridge State Forest in Allegany County.

According to police, shortly after 5:15 p.m. on February 25, troopers from the Cumberland Barrack received a call from an individual who reported he was exploring in an area of the State Forest not far from MV Smith Road in Flintstone.

The witness told investigators he found what he believed to be human remains.

Troopers responded to the area and secured the scene, Maryland State Police said in a press release.

Maryland State Police Homicide Unit investigators and crime scene technicians, along with C3I investigators and Maryland Natural Resource Police conducted scene processing and recovered what appeared to be human remains from within a heavily wooded area.

The remains have been transported to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Baltimore for an autopsy to attempt to determine the cause and manner of death.

A description of the remains is not available at this time, police said.

It is unknown how long the body had been in the woods and investigators are hoping the autopsy will provide answers to a number of questions concerning the remains.

The investigation is ongoing.
