High school renovations behind schedule

by KATE EVANS

Contractors are still significantly behind in the Berkeley Springs High School Building C and Building D renovations, holding up progress on the gym roof and floor. Factors have been the weather and difficulties finding people to do the work, Morgan County Schools Superintendent Erich May said at the August 21 school board meeting.

May expressed concerns about getting the roof on the high school Building C. Roofing contractors were behind in their summer work with all the rain. The high school gym floor work can’t begin until the roof is completed.

May said the fire marshal approved occupancy of Building D (vocational building) on Friday, August 17. Students were in the building for classes when school opened for students on Monday, August 20 but the building still needs work.

Morgan County Schools Maintenance Director Jamie Harris said the renovations work on the exterior of Building C is coming along well and that the concrete block is up for the entrance addition. Building D needs air conditioning units.

Harris said the gym locker rooms probably wouldn’t be finished for another couple of weeks. The locker rooms are still under construction and will need the fire marshal to sign off on them before they are ready for use.

The roofing materials are on site, but Harris wasn’t sure when the contractor can begin putting the new roof on the gymnasium building. He thought the roofing might take a couple of weeks. Harris said he’d know more after a Tuesday construction meeting.
