Hancock United Methodist Church to hold festival

by Geoff Fox

The Hancock United Methodist Church will be holding their third annual Free Fall Family Fun Fest in Widmeyer Park this Sunday, October 14, from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m.

Among the activities planned to be at the festival are hayrides, pumpkin decorating, scarecrow making, bouncy house, face painting, pumpkin ring toss, beanbag toss, cakewalk, snow cones, and snacks.

Last year, the event drew between 450 and 500 people, said Tracy Barnhart who is a member of the church and on the church’s leadership team.

“It’ a huge event for such a little town,” she said.

Dan Murphy, who is also a member of the church and in the leadership team, expanded on the pumpkin ring toss saying a hula-hoop is tossed over big pumpkins and the beanbag toss would be into small buckets to win little prizes.

“It’s just an opportunity for families to be out in the fall, doing something that doesn’t cost anything, and out church wants them to know we care about them,” Murphy said.

He added there would be a photo booth available for people to get their pictures taken and get a family portrait that wouldn’t cost anything.

There is no rain date scheduled, so the event is rain or shine. Some activities, such as the face painting and pumpkin decorating, are going to be in a pavilion or gazebo.

While other festivals and events usually have vendors selling goods, this festival is completely free.

Barnhart said the church and organizers didn’t want people to pay for anything and instead, spend time with their families.

She added the mission of the church is building relationships and changing lives, so “we like to get out in to the community as much as we can throughout the year.”

The fall festival is one of the church’s major events, but they also do Easter egg hunts, vacation Bible school, and a living Nativity scene with each event being free to the public.
