A group of outdoor writers from Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Maryland were took advantage of local biking, kayaking and fishing opportunities on July 13. Two Hancock residents also taught them about a National Archery in the Schools program in the region.
Karragan Hewett of Hancock displayed her archery skills for a group of outdoor writers gathered in Hancock on July 13.
David Flowers, PE teacher and coach for the Clear Spring Middle School program, was joined by Hancock resident and incoming Clear Spring High freshman Karragan Hewett who was part of the Clear Spring Middle School archery team. She competed in the Maryland tournament and national tournament in Louisville Kentucky.
Flowers and Hewett talked about the program, which also operates in both Hancock schools. Flowers pointed out that, unlike other sports, a youngster doesn’t have to be tall, fast, or inordinately strong to participate in archery. Concentration and persistence matter most, exactly the life lesson that help students succeed. To be a champion requires team work, the ability to concentrate, follow explicit directions, and learn from mistakes.
