The Berkeley Springs High School Indians Boys’ Varsity Basketball Team picked up a huge sectional win over PVC rival Petersburg on Thursday, January 9. Behind double digit scoring from four starters, the Indians rolled to a 79-65 win to improve to 5-5 on the season.
In the first quarter, Berkeley Springs jumped out to a 17-12 lead. In the second quarter Petersburg outscored the Indians 24-21, but Berkeley Springs held a slim, 38-36, lead at the break.
The third quarter became a major turning point in the game as the Indians outscored the Vikings 19-15 behind 14 points from freshman Mickey Gurson. At the end of the third quarter the Indians held a 57-51 lead.
In the fourth quarter Berkeley Springs kept torching the nets as they outscored Petersburg 22-14 to secure the 79-65 win.
The Indians were led by Gurson’s game and career high 22 points. The freshman hit five three-point shots and was three for four from the free throw line.
Three other Indians also scored in double digits as Gavin Barkley (16 points, nine rebounds and six assists), Trent Kyne (17 points, 12 rebounds and six assists) and Carson Stotler (14 points and five assists) filled the stat sheet. Ty’mir Ross added nine points and pulled down six rebounds.
In the junior varsity game, the JV Indians picked up a 43-38 overtime win over the JV Vikings.
In the first quarter, Berkeley Springs led 13-10. At the end of the second quarter the Indians held an 18-17 lead. In the third quarter Berkeley Springs held on to a tight 24-20 advantage. In the fourth quarter both teams were knotted at 38-38 at the final buzzer sending the game into overtime.
In the extra period the JV Indians scored six points to take the 44-38 win.
The JV Indians were led by Mitchell Miller’s 19 points. Tyler Barney (seven points), Antonio Sanchez (six points), Cole Oursler (five points), Preston McCoy (three points), Shawn Ott (two points) and Trevor Osborn (two points) rounded out the scoring for Berkeley Springs.
The Indians traveled to Harman, on Saturday, January 11 for a contest with the Panthers. Harman came into the contest with a 6-3 record with several quality wins. Unfortunately for the Panthers the Berkeley Springs Indians were clicking on all cylinders and grinded out an impressive 66-49 win to raise their record to 6-5 for the season.

The Indians had an away contest on Tuesday, January 14 at Hancock, Md.
Then on Friday, January 17 the Indians will travel to Petersburg for a contest with the Vikings. Junior varsity will tip-off at 6 p.m. and the varsity will follow at 7:30 p.m.
