1927-2020

Gardner Isaac “Junior” Cain, Jr., age 92, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died on Monday, March 9, 2020 at his home while under the care of Hospice of the Panhandle.

Born December 5, 1927 in Morgan County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Gardner Isaac, Sr. and Clara Ellen Householder Cain.

He was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church at Spohrs Crossroads.

Junior attended the Spohrs Crossroads School.

He worked as a fabricator with Fairchild-Hiller Aircraft in Hagerstown and also farmed.

He served as Private First Class with the U.S. Army.

Junior liked hunting, fishing, gardening, mowing and feeding the birds and squirrels.

Surviving are his children, Roger Alan Cain and his wife Judy of Wachapreague, Va. and Edna Ellen Widmeyer and her husband David of Berkeley Springs, one sister, Pauline Bechtol of Berkeley Springs, one brother, Virgil “Barney” Cain of Berkeley Springs, five grandchildren, Christopher Cain of Onancock, Va., Mark Cain of Camden, S.C., Jerry Cain of Martinsburg, W.Va., Eric Widmeyer of Berkeley Springs and Jamie Widmeyer of Bedford, Pa., nine great-grandchildren, Caleb, Jacob, Catlin, Britany, Cynthia and Samantha Cain, Cadence, Collin and Emma Widmeyer and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Oleta Mae Starliper Cain on December 2, 2008 and four brothers, Herbert “Ike” Cain, Melvin “Pooch” Cain, Charles “Bill” Cain and Sylvester Cain.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 13, 2020 at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, 5377 Martinsburg Road, Berkeley Springs, W.Va. Pastor Tony Pirrone officiated. Interment with military honors was in Spohrs Crossroads Cemetery.

The family received friends from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. on Thursday at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 95 Union Street, Berkeley Springs, WV and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.
