Emily Schultz and Emma Widmyer’s homeruns power Lady Indians past Martinsburg, 7-2

The Berkeley Springs High School Lady Indians Varsity Softball Team hosted the Class AAA Martinsburg Bulldogs last Friday, April 16. The Lady Indians were looking for their first win of the 2021 season and was eager to put on a strong showing on their home field.

Berkeley Springs took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Martinsburg bounced back to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning. In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Lady Indians stormed back with a five run inning. In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Lady Indians tacked another run on to take the 7-2 win.

Offensively the Lady Indians were led by sophomore Emily Schultz (three-run homerun) and freshman Emma Widmyer (solo homerun). Jillian Beasley (single and run), Dana Smith (single and two RBIs), Natalie McCarty (single, two runs and RBI), Marley Heath (double), Hailee Lewis (two singles and two runs) and Allison Gray (single and run) all contributed to the Berkeley Springs offense.

Schultz was the winning pitcher going the full seven innings and striking out 14 Bulldogs while scattering three hits and two runs.

The Lady Indians headed to Pennsylvania to play South Huntingdon County on Saturday, April 17.
South Huntingdon proved to be too much for the young Lady Indians as they rolled to a 16-2 win.
The Lady Indians were led by Schultz (single, double and two RBIs), Widmyer (double and run), Gray (single and run) and Destiny Parsell (single).

The Lady Indians actually were able to start their season on Tuesday, April 13 with a contest at Class AAA Musselman. The veteran experienced Musselman team no hit the Lady Indians on their way to an 18-0 win.

Berkeley Springs (1-2) played at home on Monday, April 19 against Spring Mills. Then on Wednesday, April 21 the Lady Indians will play at Jefferson at 7 p.m. On Thursday, April 22, the Lady Indians will travel to Martinsburg for a 7 p.m. game. Then on Saturday, April 24, the Lady Indians will travel to Grafton for a noon game.
