A Morgan County resident has died as a result of an early Saturday morning accident, local emergency officials have said. The driver, who was 
fatally injured in the incident, was Tyler McCumbee, 26.
According to the Morgan County Sheriff’s Department, which is investigating the crash, E911 received a report of a single vehicle accident in the 2000 block of Highland Ridge Road at 2:47 a.m. today, August 29. Fire units, Morgan County EMS and Deputy Luke Shambaugh responded to the scene. Berkeley Springs Volunteer Fire Company arrived on the scene at 3:02 a.m. Engines from South Morgan Volunteer Fire Company and other companies also assisted.
First responders found a 1992 Jeep Wrangler on its side off the right side of the roadway, said Sheriff K.C. Bohrer in a press release. Officers indicated it appeared the Jeep ran off the right hand edge of the roadway along a downhill curve. The vehicle appeared to have run into a ditch, then into an embankment. Police and fire officials said the driver of the vehicle was deceased while a passenger appeared to be unharmed. According to Berkeley Springs fire officials, crews stabilized the vehicle and began extricating the driver at 3:05 a.m., freeing McCumbee from the wreck within minutes. Morgan County Medical Examiner Christy Duckwall was called to the scene following an EMS determination that the driver was deceased.
Highland Ridge Road was closed for hours until hazards were removed and the scene was secure, said fire officials. Morgan County Deputy Reserve officers assisted with traffic control.
Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the accident. They indicated the roadway was wet and conditions were foggy at the time of the crash.
