Earl W. Brown, Sr.

1926-2021

Earl W. Brown Sr., 94, of Hagerstown, Md., passed away on April 19, 2021 at Doey’s House in Hagerstown, Md. He was born on May 15, 1926 in Nescopeck, Pa. and was raised there studying farming and graduated from Nescopeck High School as an Agriculturist in 1943. He married the love of his life, Marjorie B. Kocher on May 6, 1950 and they moved to Hagerstown, Md. where they shared their life together and raised a family.

He is preceded in death by his parents Wilmer F. Brown and Marie W. Brown (Sitler); brothers Dale and Alvin Brown; sister Norma M. Karchner “Peg,” brothers-in-law Edwin R. Kocher “Butch,” Martin Karchner (Peg), John Richart (Jeanette), sisters-in law Leanna (Dale), Gwen (Alvin), Mary (Richard), and his beloved wife of 47 years Marjorie Kocher Brown who passed away on 8/3/97. He is survived by his daughter Gail M. Chilcote (Dave) of Great Cacapon, W.Va.; son Earl W. Brown, Jr. “Chip” (Maria) of Hagerstown, Md.; 7 grandchildren – Barbara Vosburgh, Kristine Smith, Valerie Oviedo, Thomas Hatchel, Tiffany Waldridge, Zachary Brown and Evan Brown, along with 16 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. He is also survived by his siblings: Clark and wife Shirley, Richard, Jeanette Richart, Elaine “Judy” and husband Dave Yeager, sister in law Margaret “Maggie” Kocher and many nieces and nephews.

During his life here on earth he was an avid farmer, worked as a truck driver traveling up and down the east coast for Wise Potato Chips, Driver/Supervisor for Wonder Bread Hostess Cake, and a construction Superintendent in his later years. He enjoyed square dancing in the late 70’s and early 80’s, farming, gardening (vegetables and flowers), camping, butchering with his friends in Hancock, having breakfast with the locals and friends at the Park-N-Dine in Hancock, riding his 3-wheel bicycle along the rails to trails every morning for many years, socializing and telling his life stories to anyone with whom he met, and spending time and making memories with his family.

Earl, “Brownie,” “Papa Smurf,” “Pops,” and “Pap” as he was known to many left this earth peacefully surrounded by his family.

A Celebration of Life Ceremony will be held on Saturday, July 10, 12-3 p.m., at the American Legion, 400 American Legion Avenue, Williamsport, Md.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County, Md., 747 Northern Avenue or the Doey’s House, 11370 Caring Pathway Lane, both of Hagerstown, MD 21742. They played a major role in helping care for him during the last few months of his life. He along with the family are very appreciative of all they did for him.
