Barbara J. Tutor
1932-2019
Barbara Jean Tutor, 86, of Berkeley Springs, died Tuesday, February 5, 2019 at her granddaughter’s home in Berkeley Springs.
Born December 10, 1932 in Tupelo, Miss., she was the daughter of the late James Paul and Ora Pearl Wilson Whitenton.
She was a graduate of Whitehaven High School in Memphis, Tenn., did her undergraduate work at New York University and earned a Master’s degree from Loyola University in Baltimore, Md.
She worked as a computer programmer with IBM and was instrumental in writing the programming for the United States “911” emergency communication system.
She helped convert books from the New York City Library into braille for the U.S. Library of Congress.
She was a member of the Sleepy Creek Watershed Association, the Master Gardeners, the Morgan Arts Council and the Mountain Party.
She had been a candidate for public office.
She was a published author, an artist, a singer, a dancer and recently released her book Pearls Way.
Surviving are her children, David Kuebler, Coral Gables, Fla. and Regina Gorsuch, Berkeley Springs; one sister, Doris Scordino, Versailles, France; two brothers, Carl Whitenton, Frederick, Md. and Michael Welch, Forest Hills, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Services and interment will be private.

Arrangements are being handled by Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 95 Union Street, Berkeley Springs.
