Arlie A. Winters, Jr.
1932-2019
Arlie Arnold Winters, Jr., age 87, of Winchester, Va., formerly of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died on Thursday, December 26, 2019 at Winchester Medical Center, following a brief illness.
Born September 15, 1932 in Mt. Lake Park, Md. he was the son of the late Arlie A. and Genevieve Glover Winters.
He was of the Presbyterian faith. Shortly after beginning first grade Arlie moved with his family to Anchorage, Alaska where he attended school through third grade. He continued his education in Preston County, West Virginia, public schools and graduates from Terra Alta High School as Salutatorian, class of 1950. He received his pharmacy education from the West Virginia University College of Pharmacy, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy in 1954.
Over the years Arlie has been a community pharmacist, a hospital pharmacist, a nursing home consultant, and lastly an Inspector for the Board of Pharmacy.
Living in Morgan County West Virginia he has served the community pharmacy needs in a rural setting. He interned at Morrison’s Drug Store in Terra Alta from 1953 – 1954. From 1954 – 1957 he was an assistant manager and staff pharmacist at Whelan’s Drug Store in Morgantown and part-time staff pharmacist at Malone’s Cut-Rate Store in Grafton. For three months of each of these years he was Manager and pharmacist -in- charge at Whelan’s Drug Store in Charleston, W.Va. In 1957 he was commissioned First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston, Texas. He was assigned as Pharmacy Officer and Administrative Officer, Out-patient Service, U.S. Army 98th General Hospital, Newbrucke, Germany from 1957 to 1959. His administrative duties as an MSC officer including being Club Officer for both Officer’s and Enlisted Men’s Club on that post.
Following discharge from the service he established a new pharmacy at Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, which he operated for 26 years. He was also the pharmacist at War Memorial Hospital, Berkeley Springs, providing in-house service twice a day. Early in this period he established a pharmacy service at King’s Daughter Hospital in Martinsburg, West Virginia. From 1972 to 1983 he was pharmacist consultant for Valley View Nursing Home, Berkeley Springs.
In February 1986, after selling his drugstore he became an inspector for the Board of pharmacy and when he was tired of being on the road he served as Compliance Coordinator until finally retiring in 2015.
Arlie is survived by his wife, Gloria, two sons, Arlie III (and wife, Mary) and Chris, and one daughter, Cynthia Williams (and husband, David). He leaves behind grand-children , Heidi Bartkes (& Justan), Bethany Ruddek (& Zeke), Kellen Williams (& Will), Charlie Williams (& Trisha), Bon Elliott, and Kelsey Elser. One great-great-grand daughter Lorelei Grace Williams. In addition, he also leaves several grandchildren and great-grandchildren – Kristina, Morgan, Evie, Rosie, Stacy and Bella. He is survived by his pet, Maxwell, known as that dam cat!
He was preceded in death by both parents and a stepson, Stephen Elliott.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 95 Union Street, Berkeley Springs, WV.
Services and interment will be private. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to The Salvation Army, 111 Ellis Street, Martinsburg, WV 25404.
