Sweeten Your Life with a Bowl of Cherries

There was nothing my Great Grandmother Arizona Henry enjoyed more than cherries. She always told me that pitting fresh cherries was time well spent. Grandma said you should always leave the stems on cherries because they kept longer that way.

The sweet flavor of cherries makes them perfect for a healthy snack. They are low in calories and high in fiber. Cherries have vitamin C, A, and K. They also have potassium, magnesium, and calcium. They have anti-inflammatory properties, which may benefit those with arthritis and gout.

It’s fun to take your kids or grandkids to a local farm where you can pick your own cherries. If time doesn’t allow for picking your own, you can find fresh cherries during June and July at the grocery store.

Cherry Crisp

5 cups fresh pitted cherries

4 tbsp. flour

1/2 cup sugar

 

  1. Mix all ingredients.
  2. Place in a greased 9×13 baking dish.

 

 

Crumble Mixture

1 cup flour

1 cup oats

½ cup melted butter

1 cup brown sugar

2 tsp. cinnamon

¼ tsp. baking powder

¼ tsp. baking soda

 

  1. Mix all ingredients until crumbly.
  2. Top cherries with crumble mixture.
  3. Bake at 375 degrees for 35-40 minutes.
