Friday crash now has second fatality

A second person has now died as a result of a Friday morning head-on crash along U.S. 522 north of Berkeley Springs, according to police.

Morgan County Sheriff K.C. Bohrer announced Saturday evening that the driver of a northbound pickup truck involved in the May 3 accident succumbed to the injuries he sustained in the collision. The accident happened around 11:30 a.m. on Friday.

Sheriff Bohrer identified the driver as Charles P. Nutwell, 47, of Williamsport, Md. and said he was notified Saturday of Nutwell’s death.

Police confirmed yesterday that the crash claimed the life of a female riding in the other pickup truck involved in the accident. Bohrer released her name on Saturday evening, identifying the victim as Lexus C. Miller, 18, of Berkeley Springs.

Miller was the passenger in a truck driven by Bryce G. Waugh, 18, also of Berkeley Springs. Waugh was taken to a hospital in Johnstown, Pa. following the incident. Bohrer had no further information about Waugh’s condition on Saturday.

Sheriff Bohrer, who is the lead investigator in the case, said witness information indicates Waugh’s vehicle was heading toward Berkeley Springs and was passing vehicles in a no-passing stretch of U.S. 522. The collision took place near Brosius Lane, which is at the crest of the hill above the Hancock bridge.

An investigation into the crash continues. Bohrer is being assisted by Cpl. Lemon of the Sheriff’s Department and Cpl. S. R. Smith of the West Virginia State Police.

Units responded from the West Virginia State Police, Hancock Police Department, Washington County Fire and EMS, Berkeley Springs Volunteer Fire Company, Morgan County EMS and the Morgan County Medical Examiner.

do not understand why he would be passing when there are two lanes going up the hill in the south bound side of the highway one for slow moving and one for faster cars going south does not make scene
