David M. Griffith
David Marshall Griffith, 62 of Berkeley Springs, WV, formerly of Dille, WV, was called Home August 6, 2012, after an extended illness. He was the son of Ted and Leona Griffith and was born in Elkins, WV. He was preceded in death by his father Ted Griffith, Jr.
David was a graduate of Hancock High School, Hancock, Maryland. He attended Hagerstown Jr. College and James Rumsey Vocational Institute. David served in the US 7th Army’s 87th Maintenance Battalion with tours of duty in Germany and Viet Nam. He worked briefly at Little Miss Cannery in Berkeley Springs and was later employed as a welder for Commercial Sheering also in Berkeley Springs. In 1976, he went to work for Chessie System Railroad and after successfully completing Chessie System Engineers Training Program he spent the next 23 years as an engineer for the railroad on the Cumberland/Brunswick Division before disabilities forced him to retire. David was an avid Washington Redskins fan. He was a longtime aficionado of Country & Western and Rock & Roll music and was a walking encyclopedia of information from both genres. David was a very active member of the Warm Springs Baptist Church of Berkeley Springs and spoke of those folks as his second family. His friendly ways, outgoing personality, and affectionate sense of humor will be sadly missed by those multitude of friends and acquaintances whose lives he has touched.
He is survived by his mother, Leona Griffith of Dille, formerly of Berkeley Springs, brothers TG Griffith and his wife Joyce of Dille and Mark Griffith and his wife Vicki of Belle, WV, nieces Leanne Deitz and her husband Matt of Stuarts Draft, VA, Andrea Gale and her husband Larry and their children Lauren Gale and Kellan Gale, all of Allison Park, PA, and Amanda Penix and her husband Michael of Reedsville, WV, nephews Matthew Griffith and his wife April and their children Zachery Griffith and Natalie Griffith, all of Sissonville, WV, and Jonathan Griffith and his wife Callie and their son Lucas Griffith, all of Kanawha City, WV.
There will be a graveside service conducted by Pastor Danny Richardson followed by military honors at the Walnut Grove Cemetery near Dille on Sunday, August 19, at 1:00 pm. There will be a memorial celebration of David’s life at the Warm Springs Baptist Church on Sunday, August 26, at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Warm Springs Baptist Church, 3683 Pious Ridge Rd, Berkeley Springs, WV 25411.
