Why did they do it?
Dear Editor:
I am pondering why someone would vandalize someone else’s property. For the life of me, I can’t think of a single good reason.
The Little League concession stand was broken into for the second year in a row. Last year, a few leftover items were taken but with little vandalism. This year, men’s softball was still being held and the Little League had begun practice for fall ball, so there were still items in the building to be sold to help raise funds for Little League.
To my chagrin, most of the sellable items have been destroyed. A complete mess was made of the inside of the stand. It was the compassion of a few individuals who took it upon themselves to clean it up before I had a chance to see it.
There are two reasons this incident has distressed me. First, I have spent hundreds of hours trying to help the Little League by managing the stand. My time is spent cleaning the stand, figuring orders, going and picking up the orders, depositing monies, cooking and having the stand open for many practices and all the games. This might not seem to bother some people, but I have health problems and some days it is a real accomplishment for me to get through a day.
But I’m not as upset for myself as I am for the kids who play Little League. The money earned goes for replacing uniforms due to wear and tear or “lost,” the equipment needed to play, insurance, Little League fees, renting the concession building, use of the fields and lights and other expenses. The items could have helped pay some of these costs. The concession stand is the main source of income.
So, whoever vandalized the Little League concession stand, did they think of all the consequences from their dastardly deed? The time to clean the mess? The expense of replacing everything that had to be thrown away? Do they even care?
I would like to know what gets into a person or persons that they feel like they can destroy something that doesn’t even belong to them and if they even once considered the consequences of their actions. I seriously doubt it. What a shame.
