Four Morgan County youth attend leadership academy

Colton MacCumbee, Tommy Shaffer, Brandon Krawczyk and Steven Thames from Morgan County participated in the West Virginia Sheriffs' Association Youth Leadership Academy. The academy was held at Camp Ona in Cabell County from July 15-20.

The youths learned close order drill, team leadership, safe firearms handling and first aid among other skills. They saw demonstrations from SWAT, Explosive Ordinance Disposal and DNR. They participated in the election process, a mock vehicle accident, mock crime scene and a mock criminal trial.

Sheriff Vince Shambaugh has participated in the camp for the past four years and served as Deputy Camp Commandant for three of those years. The Sheriff stresses the importance of youth involvement and praises those who participated.

The camp is open to kids both male and female finishing eighth grade through their senior year. Details of the camp are available at the Sheriff’s Office.
