New medical practice heals families

Michael’s Family Medical is a new practice that Dr. Amanda Michael opened last month at the former Calvary Bible Church location at 2055 Valley Road, Berkeley Springs.

Dr. Michael’s practice treats children, babies and adults for anything and everything.

She drew the business logo on a napkin one night after dinner. Da Vinci is one of her inspirations, so her design features the Vetruvian Man inside of a triangle shape.

“I wanted to bring in the concept of mind, body and spirit as well as the physical body,” Michael said. “Medicine involves all aspects, and that’s why I wanted to symbolize that.”

Michael is an osteopathic physician and takes a “whole-person” approach to health care.

“Health care looking at just one piece of it doesn’t work,” she said. “It’s when you get all the pieces to fit together that it truly makes sense.”

One roadblock Michael has hit is the incredibly complicated process of insurance.

“We started back in January, credentialing with insurance companies, and Medicare is the only one that has completed our application so far,” Michael said. “Everyone else has our paperwork, so we’re just waiting for them to sign.”

In a few weeks, she hopes to honor major providers such as Blue Cross Blue Shield and United Health Care.

Michael did her residency in Front Royal, Virginia, and as soon as she finished there on July 1, she opened in Berkeley Springs.

She decided she wanted to be a doctor when she was hospitalized with a serious illness at age eight and met a strong, confident doctor.

Life made medical school a struggle. “After taking an extended leave, I had trouble getting in to medical school, but once in there, no one could stop me,” Michael said.

Her office building was completed by Double T Homebuilders just a week before she moved in. The 1,960-sq.-ft. space was custom-built to Michael’s specifications.

Hours for Michael’s Family Medical are currently 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. For more information, call 304-258-8824.
