World class African drumming and dance coming Saturday
Authentic African dance and drumming combine with colorful costumes when the Sankofa Dance Theater comes to Berkeley Springs State Park Saturday, July 14. Part of the Morgan Arts Council’s Summer Concerts in the Park, the concert starts at 5:30 p.m. Rain location is the nearby Ice House art center.
Internationally acclaimed, this Baltimore-based troupe is renowned for their energetic drumming, exuberant dancing and vibrant costumes.
The name “Sankofa” comes from a West African word meaning “go back and retrieve,” which the troupe uses to mean learning from the West African traditions of the past to bring greater intercultural awareness for the global community today.
The free concert series continues every Saturday through late August.
Major sponsors for the concert series are Lot 12, Best Western Berkeley Springs Inn and the Star Theatre. Additional funding support comes from the National Endowment for the Arts and the West Virginia Commission on the Arts as well as local hotel-motel tax revenues.
