Energy Express volunteers
Dear Editor:
Energy Express is a summer enrichment program throughout West Virginia. The program is sponsored by AmeriCorps, Volunteer West Virginia and West Virginia Extension Service. It focuses on providing a print-rich environment and a safe nurturing place for children in grades K-6 to spend their summer.
Each child also receives two nutritious meals a day and opportunities to improve their reading and writing skills. Anyone under the age of 18 is also invited to receive free breakfast and lunch.
Volunteers are an essential part of our program and keep things running smoothly every day at the site. They are a great sources of support and encouragement and give the children, the one-on-one time and attention that they might not otherwise receive throughout the school year.
We are on the search for teen and adult volunteers to come in every day and read one-on-one with the children. Teen volunteers should be at least 13 years old. Along with reading with the children, volunteers help with others tasks around the site like recreation and art.
Energy Express is located at Warm Springs Middle School and runs Monday through Friday each week until July 27, except for July 4. Breakfast begins at 8:45 and students leave for the day at 12:30. Volunteers interested in helping, but will not be eating breakfast, should arrive around 9:15. If you have any questions or would like more information, call Jenna Hull at 240-625-8344.
