School Extra Milers

Extra Miler awards were presented to several Widmyer Elementary teachers and parents at the May 1 Morgan County School Board meeting. The awards were part of the Widmyer Elementary local school improvement council presentation.

Teacher Bonnie Butts was given the Extra Miler award because she went the extra mile to plan, organize and modify instruction to increase student skills and received high quality results. She was a great teacher who was an inspiration to her peers and an inspiration to students.

Assistant Principal Ginnie Molnar read a tribute exemplifying Extra Miler special education teacher Andrea LaRue. It said that “to teach is to touch a life forever.” Teaching was a calling to give enough of oneself to a child, to cheer them on through joy and trouble. LaRue was very caring and a true champion for struggling students, Molnar said.

Parent Dawn Beal was honored with an Extra Miler for being an organized, vigorous and energetic volunteer for Widmyer Elementary with a can-do attitude. She helped with the Morgan County Backpack Program for kids, Fun Night and finding more than 70 items for their auction. Beal said that her parents taught her to volunteer and that she does it for her kids.

Dave Shives also received an Extra Miler award for working closely with school staff to get his grandson the special help that he needed.

The Extra Miler award is given to individuals who go above and beyond their job expectations and who are a positive representative for their school, the school system and the community.
