Come up with a new plan

Dear Editor:

Commissioners Stacy Dugan and Brad Close made a humongous mistake in turning down the Humane Society proposal. HSMC will look at our alternatives and come up with a new plan for our future and the kennels. One thing is certain. Our concern for the dogs under the care of the county will not be affected. We will never abandon our dog friends. We will continue to speak out for the voiceless of Morgan County. That is our mission and we will never waiver in that commitment.

Our first goal is to see that the county kennels on Route 9 are shut down permanently. Our second goal is to see that the commissioners adequately fund their state mandated obligation to run an animal control operation. The county budget for animal control is the same as 10 years ago and it was woefully inadequate then. On Friday the commissioners adopted their new budget with no new funding for animal control. The sheriff’s department rightfully received a new $30,000 vehicle. Animal control was told that their single vehicle with 155,000 miles is fine for another year.

I made one mistake in responding to questions from Commissioner Close. Although I was dumfounded by the relevance of his questions about bequests to HSMC, I answered them truthfully. I misunderstood his point and thought he was inferring something about past bequests. I realized later that he was referring to future bequests. When I asked what he was talking about he said he could not say to protect his “confidences.”
HSMC is confident that we will succeed in having the county close their unsanitary and inhumane kennels. As Bob Dylan said, “In the final end they won the war after losing every battle.”
