County Science Fair

The Morgan County Schools County Science Fair was held Saturday, January 14, at Berkeley Springs High School. There was a total of 113 exhibits eligible to compete with 69 present the day of competition.

In addition to exhibit presentation, organized activities were available to participants in-between judging. Kevin Boles, Morgan County Observatory, did a rocketry enrichment activity with the secondary students where they built and launched rockets. Denis Scott, WVU Extension Agent, and Cindy Smalley, WVU Extension, Program Assistant, did a National 4-H Science Experiment titled, “Wired for Wind” with the elementary students.

An array of judges specializing in various science fields from around the Eastern Panhandle and four-state region volunteered their time to critique the projects presented.

Middle and high school winners are eligible to compete at the regional science fairs. The Eastern Panhandle Regional High School Science Fair will be held Tuesday, March 6, at Potomac State College of WVU/Keyser. The Eastern Panhandle Regional Middle School Science Fair will be held Tuesday, March 13, at Shepherd University.

Elementary Category winners
Animal Science—Delia Maguire, Paw Paw Elementary first place and Elizabeth Henderson, Paw Paw Elementary second.

Behavioral and Social Sciences—Hannah Salman, Warm Springs Intermediate first place and Samantha Allen, Warm Springs Intermediate third.

Biochemistry—Alex Banks, Warm Springs Intermediate first place and Cody Cottle, Warm Springs Intermediate second.

Botany—Ethan Hatcher, Warm Springs Intermediate first place and Sara Butts, Warm Springs Intermediate second.

Cellular and Molecular Biology—Tristan Wall and Andrew Kurtz, Paw Paw Elementary team first place.

Chemistry—Katie Caper-ton, Warm Springs Intermedi-ate, Catherine Myers, Warm Springs Intermediate and Matthew Rubeck, Warm Springs Intermediate all tied for first place, Dylan Carder and Jennifer Waugh, Warm Springs Intermediate team second and Hana Hendrickson, Paw Paw Elementary third.
Earth Science—Ace More-land, Paw Paw Elementary and Megan Brown, Paw Paw Elementary, tied for first place.

Engineering—Damion Foltz, Pleasant View Elementary second place and Alex Myer, Warm Springs Intermediate third.

Energy and Transportation—Isaac Kyne and Hunter Wachter, Warm Springs Intermediate team third place.

Environmental Sciences—Remington Miller, Pleasant View Elementary first place, Bryce Caron, Pleasant View Elementary second, Avery Lackey and Riley Young, Pleasant View Elementary team third.

Medicine and Health—Meghan Fox, Warm Springs Intermediate first place, Tailyn Michael, Warm Springs Intermediate second and Kayley Brinegar, Warm Springs Intermediate third.

Physics and Astonomy—Landon Harrington, Warm Springs Intermediate first place, Aurora Maybearry, Pleasant View Elementary second and Kaitlyn Hoffman, Greenwood Elementary third.
